The Dermatology Service of the Germans Trias Hospital conducts intense research activity, participating in multiple competitive and collaborative projects, both nationally and internationally. The team is part of multicenter registries on psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, cutaneous lymphomas, hidradenitis suppurativa, and urticaria, consolidating the service as a reference in dermatological research. Studies on clinical biomarkers using "omics" and Big Data technologies stand out, as well as involvement in innovation projects, including artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
In addition, the service has established a management model with the hiring of data managers and data entry personnel, allowing better coordination in clinical trials and observational studies.
Research activity includes collaboration with other institutions such as the VHIR, the ICO, and the CNIO in genetic studies and innovative therapies for various skin diseases. This commitment to research is reflected in the publication of high-impact scientific articles and the training of young researchers through doctoral theses and competitive grants.

Psoriasis
Psoriasis, with a prevalence of 2.3% in Catalonia and Spain, is one of the most common reasons for consultations with dermatology specialists. It is a chronic inflammatory disease, genetically conditioned, that can occur at any time in life and is very heterogeneous from a clinical perspective.
The most common manifestations consist of red and scaly plaques, which characteristically appear on the elbows and knees, but can develop in practically any location , including the scalp, palms, soles , or skin folds. In some patients, the nails are also affected, appearing wrinkled and yellowish, and the joints may show swelling, pain, and even deformation in some cases.
It is a chronic disease and it is not possible to offer a definitive cure, but very satisfactory responses can be achieved with the available treatments. These treatments include several options , whether topically, orally, or parenterally (intravenously), depending on the characteristics, extent, and severity of the condition.
Each treatment has its advantages and disadvantages, which must be assessed on a personalized basis. The latter is the key factor in achieving the best possible results in a disease as complex as psoriasis. Patients must be evaluated individually, and this must be conducted by professionals with the maximum expertise in the knowledge of the disease and the therapeutic possibilities.
At Germans Trias, this is managed by the Psoriasis Unit, composed of highly specialized medical and nursing professionals.
Melanoma
Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Thus, despite not being the most frequent, it accounts for up to 80% of deaths from skin cancer. The main cause is solar radiation, particularly sunburn.
From a clinical perspective , melanoma presents as a pigmented lesion that is usually asymmetrical, with irregular margins, uneven coloration, a diameter greater than 6 mm, or as lesions that change shape or grow.
Early diagnosis is vital in melanoma. Therefore, if a lesion meets these characteristics, it is important to see your family doctor as soon as possible.
